A musical comedy directed by Filipino master filmmaker Mike De Leon, Kakabakaba Ka Ba? tells the chaotic story of a young couple accidentally finding themselves in trouble with transnational gangs. Johnny has just returned from Japan having unknowingly brought an audio cassette stuffed with opium. Yakuza gangsters are now after him and his friends to retrieve their goods. Johnny’s group takes refuge in a church in Baguio, only to discover that the church’s priests and nuns are imposters in league with the Japanese. To make matters worse, the Chinese mafia, at odds with Japanese cartel, has decided to join the mayhem. It seems the more they try to escape, the more they run into trouble. The film’s chaos is only amplified by the many musical spectacles. Beneath its comedic surface, the film delivers a commentary on the influence greater powers have on the country’s socio-economic situation. It has been recognized as one of the most outstanding Filipino films of the 1980s. In 2015, on the occasion of its 35th anniversary, the film was digitally restored by ABS-CBN Film Archives re-released in cinemas.
