The Long Excuse

Sachio, a novelist, loses his wife in an accident that also claims her best friend. He is with another woman when he hears the news, and has to fake the grief everyone expects from him. His mistress, horrified, tells him he doesn’t really love anyone, and leaves him. Under pressure to channel emotions he does not feel into his writing, he meets Yoichi, the best friend’s truck-driver husband. Volunteering to look after Yoichi’s two young children while their father is away at work, he finds himself becoming attached to them. Then he discovers, just before the filming of a TV show for which he must again demonstrate false grief for his late wife that she had in fact fallen out of love with him. For the first time he feels a genuine emotion: that of rage. He encourages the still-mourning Yoichi to put his loss behind him, but when Yoichi starts to draw close to a woman he has met because of the TV show, Sachio is left to face himself, desolated and alone.
